Detailed description of Portland Golf Club

Portland Golf Club is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Portland, Oregon.

Portland Golf Club first opened for play in 1914. The course was designed by George Turnbull. Over the years, a number of well-recognized professionals have made contributions to the course layout of PGC. For example, Robert Trent Jones established a design goal "to make the player stop and think before swinging." This concept is prevalent throughout the course, with trees, greens, and hazards all proving to be key variables in a player's shot selection. Robert Trent Jones (1950), Robert Muir Graves (1985), and John Steidel (1987) have done redesigns on the course.

Portland Golf Club is a par 72 course that plays to 6,703 yards from the back tees. The course rating is 73.0 and the slope rating is 143. Black tees: 6,703 yards, 73.0/143.0. Blue tees: 6,353 yards, 71.4/141.0. White Men's tees: yards, 5,958 69.3/134.0. White Ladies' tees: 5,958 yards, 75.1/138.0. Red tees: 5,858 yards, 74.5/137.0. Red/Green tees: 5,582 yards, 73.1/134.0.

This hilly course has few water hazards, but plenty of trees to challenge play. The fairways are narrow, and the greens are large. With its towering firs, lush fairways, and rolling greens, Portland Golf Club is both a challenging and enjoyable golf course.

PGC has a long history of hosting international competitions. These include The 1947 Ryder Cup, Western Amateur, Women's Western Open, Portland Open, 1946 PGA Championship Men's Western Open, Alcan Open, US Senior Open, the LPGA Championship, US Senior Amateur, and the Fred Meyer Challenge.

The legendary Ben Hogan shot 65-69-63-64 to win the 1945 Portland Open. The 63--tied by Dr. Cary Middlecoff at the Western Open--stand to this day as the course record. Ben Hogan captured the prestigious PGA Championship in 1946 and the following year led the American team to a near clean sweep of the British team in the 1947 Ryder Cup.

I've been a member for 33 years and have never played a round of golf where I didn't thoroughly enjoy the golf course, the ambiance and the people I've played with. Every guest I've entertained there just love the golf course. The Oregon Jr./Sr. have the biggest field of the year when PGC is played. Is is a privilege to belong there and I will continue as a social member long after I can't play anymore.
